Excellence
in Health Promotion Awards
This award recognizes individuals
and organizations working to improve the health
and safety of British Columbians. It celebrates those who
demonstrate leadership in health
promotion.
BCMA aims to encourage more groups and
individuals to undertake health promotion
activities by honouring current exceptional health
promotion initiatives.
Nomination Criteria
Nominees must have:

Demonstrated a concern for
health and safety through specific actions and/or
initiatives
-
Exemplified creativity and
initiative in taking action to improve and protect
health and safety
-
Brought about change(s) with
the potential for positive, long-term improvement in
protecting health and safety in BC

Nominees

- A business or community organization based
in BC
- Contributing, or recently contributed, to the improvement or protection
of health and safety through actions, policy initiatives
or increased public awareness.

The deadline for nominations is
5 May 2008.
One completed nomination form must accompany each entry.
There is no limit to the number of entries. There
is no entry fee.
Selection
Process
A
volunteer committee of representatives from health,
business and community organizations reviews the nominations
and selects the winning entry for each category.
Each entry is judged against the degree to which it
-
promotes the health and/or safety of people in
British
Columbia
- demonstrates "health promotion" as
defined by the World Health Organization
All nominees will be notified of the results once a
winner is selected in each category.

Wendy Creelman
- Individual /Community Category
Wendy was awarded for her program In Motion
which she designed to increase physical activity and
improve the health of the residents in her community,
Abbotsford. A a result of her vision and leadership, 85%
of Abbotsford schools have adopted the In Motion
programs and over 50 worksites are official members.
TELUS
- Corporate /Community Category
For the Telus Tour for the Cure which went province-wide
targeting women over the age of 40 to urge them to be
vigilant and pro-active about their breast health and
the steps they should take for early detection. The Tour
reached out to over 70 communities with several hundred
women booking their first ever mammogram. In 2006 there
was a increase of more than 2,500 mammogram appointments
recorded BC wide than the previous year.
BC Ministry of the Environment
- Not for Profit /Community Category
For their Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) which provides
data about the components of air quality that have known
health effects, and is updated every three hours so that
residents can make informed decisions about being
outdoors. Environment Canada and Health Canada
anticipate adopting the AQHI as the national standard
for reporting air quality next year.

For
their Mature Drivers Program which works to ensure
seniors remain safe and proficient on the road. The
program respects seniors’ strong need for empowerment
and independence while recognizing that mobility plays a
significant role in their lives, lifestyle and
well-being.
SportMedBC
- Corporate
/Community Category
For
their InTraining Walk/Run program, which promotes health
and fitness for all British Columbians interested in
adopting a more active lifestyle. Now in its 11th year,
the clinics help more than 4,000 participants safely and
comfortably reach their running and walking goals each
year.
